According to a 2015 survey, 5% of capstone design course instructors indicated that their courses involve students from more than one engineering discipline. Students in these courses may hear presentations on topics of common interest and work together on project teams that require knowledge and skills from more than one discipline.
Part of our mission at Marquette University (and that of many other schools) is to prepare students for their personal and professional lives after graduation.
In June 2016, I attended the 2016 Capstone Design Conference in Columbus, Ohio. It was the fifth in a series of conferences starting in 2007 that focus on all aspects of capstone design courses. More than 200 attendees representing 76 institutions from several countries met
Many engineering schools in the United States provide opportunities for their undergraduate students to gain practical, real-world experience in their chosen disciplines. Cooperative education is a structured method of combining classroom-based education with practical work experience.
Design projects are a major part of the capstone design course. By focusing on the design process and allowing students to gain hands-on experience in design, they help prepare students for careers in engineering.
The ability to identify unmet needs and new product opportunities is an important skill for biomedical engineering students planning a career in the medical device industry. Most biomedical engineering graduates will work in industry where many projects will not be defined for them. They will
Lectures in capstone design courses provide an opportunity to present information needed by students to properly execute their projects and/or prepare them for their careers. They can be used to supplement reading assignments or introduce new material not presented elsewhere in the course or biomedical
During the 2013 Biomedical Engineering Society meeting in Seattle, Washington, I spoke with a department chair about his program’s capstone design course
Capstone design courses help prepare students for professional practice. The demands of the workplace are constantly changing, requiring students to be aware of the latest changes and trends affecting the medical device industry
Global healthcare innovation requires collaboration between groups of people located in different parts of the world, and as such, this type of distance collaboration is a growing trend in industry. Often, team members from various departments of a global organization who need to work together to design, develop, and introduce new products are not in the same location. For example, R&D personnel may be located in the United States, the production facility may be located in Ireland, and other key personnel may be located in Singapore. In this situation, a virtual team can be formed to complete the new product development project. Virtual teams are similar to traditional teams but are geographically separated and rely heavily on virtual methods of communication (email, Skype, teleconferencing, etc.) instead of regular face-to-face meetings.
